5 Reasons To Step Out of Your Comfort Zone

Hello There!

What does it mean to be afraid? As a child, it was pretty easy to identify. I am afraid of the dark. I am afraid of the shadow that looks like a monster. I am afraid of being away from my mom or dad. As an adult, it may not be as easy to spot.

Adult Fears

The fear of starting over. The fear of being a beginner. The fear of self discovery. The fear of failing. The fear of rejection. The fear of judgement.

All of these fears, I have experienced and still do! And no matter where you are in your life, if you (when you) feel these fears … It is okay. In fact, it is more than okay. It makes you human and it means you are stretching, expanding and jumping out of your comfort zone - this is where the growth happens.

Personal Story Time

Recently, I was fearful of starting over. I began my entrepreneurship journey a year ago and when I started on the path, I felt like I knew exactly what steps to take. AHA! That was not the case. I created my business and I came out into the world as a spiritual advisor - but along the way, something didn’t feel 100% authentic to me. I was neglecting a massive part of myself. I was forgetting my very real business experience. I have experience in corporate business, financial, management, marketing, leasing, leadership, event planning, operations and everything in between. And just like that “poof!” overnight; I wiped it away. There is nothing wrong with how I emerged, but it neglected my true life’s purpose - which is to bring vibrancy, happiness and wellness into the modern WORK place. How could I have done that when I didn’t acknowledge or bring to light any of my business experience?!

So I had to change A LOT of things I had already invested in for my business - the copy I originally created and marketed, my website, my offerings… everything down to how I introduced myself and my message. These decisions were met with fear. I didn’t want to start again. I was embarrassed to be a beginner. I was looking to achieve perfection, straight away. (striving for perfection is another form of fear of rejection, but more on that later!)

Once I embraced the changes that needed to happen - it all clicked. I understood each building block of my business and myself - which makes me more confident in selling, it makes my value proposition clear and my intention behind it - VIBRANT.

Your Turn… How Could This Story Be a Mirror For You In Your Life?

I share this to encourage you to get real with yourself. Where are you holding back because you are afraid? What are you not switching up because you feel like “uhh I have to go back to the beginning.” or “I already invested so much time in this company, I have X years until I can retire with X benefits” or “I already put all of this money into this business idea and I do not want to give it up.”

Sometimes we stay in something far longer than we know is best because we are afraid. We are scared of the unknown, putting ourselves out there and opening ourselves up to rejection. However, we must recognize that on the other side of fear and resitance - is acceptance, is expansion and is ultimately… where we need to be.

Here are 5 steps to take to take you from Fear to Greatness

  1. Acknowledge The Awesomeness of Being a Beginner - Think about it. Being a beginner is actually pretty cool. There are no expectations set. There is no pressure. It is simple, you are learning. So embrace it - and use it to start over again and again. And if you don’t (you wont’) get it right - it’s okay to say “Ohhh that’s right, I am a beginner!”

  2. Recognize The Growth - We are not meant to be tedious human beings. We are meant to change - all the time. So if you are doing the same thing you did 10 year ago - where is the growth? Where is the new version of you? You are destined to be something much bigger, more expanded and vibrant.

  3. There Is Purpose Behind It All - If you have had thoughts like “a change is needed” or you feel like something inside of you is nudging you; follow that! You do not receive that internal guidance by happenstance, it is coming to you with a purpose, calling you into something that is bigger and apart of your unique path. There is a purpose to you having these thoughts, do not let yourself down by not following it.

  4. See What You Discover - Life is supposed to be exciting and fun, not all the time, but a lot of the time! Remember how you viewed the world as a child; bright eyed, curious and seeing life through wonder. Embrace that essence now, as an adult. Make your life more vibrant, healthier and stretch yourself to be the person you are destined to be. Think about all the potential of who you may meet and what you may learn from this new venture. Where will it bring you? It is exciting!

  5. Inspire Others - People that pretend not to notice you, are watching you. Trust that. While inspiring yourself and making changes - you are inspiring others to do the same. It may be your children, your spouse, your co-workers or even someone that challenges you. If they see you put forth effort to enhance your life, they will too and you know what that means - a better humanity, a better planet, a better working world, a more balanced and happier society. When we all live out our truth, we become a better one. Inspire yourself, inspire those around you. Just do it.
